Knowing staff as individuals means knowing about their major personal accomplishments. Is a staff member running a marathon? Graduating from nursing school? Welcoming a new baby (remember new moms and dads)? Congratulate them!
Consider offering a note of congratulations on your organization’s Facebook page or other social media, in a newsletter, on an announcement board, or in a team meeting. Not only does this show that you support work/life balance, but it also allows for staff to get to know one another on a deeper level.
Remember, it’s always important to know what level of recognition individuals are comfortable receiving. Public recognition for an accomplishment may be very important to one person, while highly embarrassing for another. For some it may be more appropriate to write a card or simply congratulate them in person.
