By Bobbie Guidry

As a result of the 2019 assisted living licensure law effective Aug. 1, 2021, every licensed assisted living setting in Minnesota will require a Licensed Assisted Living Director (LALD). The Board of Executives for Long Term Services and Supports (BELTSS) will open their online application system in waves based on current qualifications, beginning with those who can qualify for legacy licensure. Legacy licensure, up to this point, has been referred to as “grandfathering” or “grandparenting.”

There are five distinct legacy pathways outlined in the Minnesota Statutes. We encourage you to review the pathways to determine if you will quality for legacy licensure. Individuals who qualify for licensure under one of the pathways must apply no later than June 30, 2021.

For those NOT eligible to be licensed as legacy directors, the application process will begin in June or July, and we will be by your side to ensure you have all the tools are resources you need to apply.

Applications will be submitted electronically.

BELTSS recently updated information on their website to include information on five legacy pathways to ALD licensure. The information includes what items to have ready in order to complete the on-line process, such as validation of education and work history.

We will let you know as soon as BELTSS makes applications available for LALD.
