At the Capitol: Minnesota Lawmakers Enter the Final Stretch of Hearings on Hero Pay

September 1, 2021
By Matt Steele

In late July, a select working group began hosting hearings on allocating the money set aside during the 2021 special session for Hero Pay bonuses for frontline workers. Several different groups are vying for a piece of the $250 million. This week, the working group hosted a hearing to discuss the criteria used to allocate the money.

Where things are
The working group on frontline worker bonuses is meeting this week to determine eligibility criteria. In general, the DFL members of the working group are proposing a more encompassing range of guidelines that would result in a larger group of people receiving a smaller bonus. In contrast, Republican working group members recommended a narrower set of eligibility requirements that prioritize workers facing the most significant risk. While the committee has yet to decide the official criteria, there seems to be agreement that whatever is set will need to be easily validated to avoid an administrative burden and allow for the quick release of the funds.

Where things are going
The working group on Hero Pay bonuses will be meeting on Sept. 2 with the express goal of proposing specific eligibility requirement ideas and providing a final opportunity for testimony from the public. Regardless of party affiliation, members expressed a desire to come to a unified proposal.
