Elder Circle in Grand Rapids and Volunteers of America recently received grants from the Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) to support people with Alzheimer’s and those who care for them.

DHS awarded $750,000 in grants to help organizations offer memory screenings and training, focusing on being more culturally responsive to diverse communities and working with health care providers to improve services.

Elder Circle received $78,712 to offer dementia education through different technologies in rural Itasca and St. Louis counties, to promote memory screening and to support people living with dementia and those providing care through memory clubs, the Powerful Tools for Caregivers program and support groups.

Volunteers of America, Edina, $107,809 to increase dementia awareness within the Minneapolis and St. Paul public housing authority buildings through education and physical activity, to conduct memory screenings, to train staff of human service organizations and to offer support to those providing care to persons with dementia, all while being culturally responsive to African American, East African and Hmong communities.
