Federal Judge Blocks Public Charge Rule
A federal judge last week issued a nationwide preliminary injunction blocking the Public Charge final rule that would have allowed the government to base green card decisions on whether an immigrant could be later seen as a financial burden on taxpayers.
LeadingAge strongly opposed this rule as it would have dramatically heightened scrutiny of immigrants based on their current or future use of public benefits, potentially forcing immigrant seniors to choose between aging services or losing their immigration status and further exacerbating the workforce crisis in aging services.
Because of the court’s ruling, the public charge rule did not go into effect on Oct. 15 as planned.
