Outdoor Visitation: Pet Visits

June 30, 2020
By Bobbie Guidry

In its outdoor visitation guidance, MDH states that “pets must be under the control of the visitor bringing them in.” We have received a few questions as to whether residents may pet and hold the animal. MDH said residents can do so, if desired.

Adding pets to the guidance was intended to facilitate contact with the pet if a resident is inclined to enjoy pet visits. This was deemed especially significant by MDH, as contact from a friendly pet can provide some comfort and needed connection when human touch is limited under current restrictions.

The person bringing a pet should maintain control of the animal, either with an extendable leash to accommodate 6- foot social distancing or by voice control in case there is a need to quickly retrieve the pet.
