Shared Accountability: New National Commission on Nursing Home Safety & Quality

June 23, 2020
By Jodi Boyne

A new White House commission focused on protecting nursing home residents throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond was announced last week. Providers who were appointed to that commission are seeking deeper collaboration with regulators that is focused more on solutions, not penalties.

The 25 members of the Coronavirus Commission for Safety and Quality in Nursing Homes will review nursing homes’ response to the COVID-19 pandemic and come up with recommendations for new regulations and procedures for future emergency situations.

While nursing homes have viewed the commission as an opportunity to establish more support for new emergencies, regulators may see it as an opportunity to create more demands of providers across a variety of issues.A focus on enforcement and penalties will not effectively solve the problem or guarantee safety and quality. One goal of providers from this commission is to secure the necessary resources that prioritize residents and professional caregivers in our setting.
