Resources for Supporting New Americans in Long-Term Care Workforce Roles

The LeadingAge Minnesota Foundation, with funding support from the Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) GEAR Division, has developed a collection of practical, real-world resources to help long-term care employers welcome and support New Americans—through recruitment, training, retention, and career advancement in long-term care settings.

New Americans are essential to the strength and future of long-term care in Minnesota. Immigrants and refugees bring skill, compassion, knowledge, and deep commitment to caring for older adults and supporting families. When New Americans are welcomed, supported, and given opportunities to grow, long-term care communities become stronger, more inclusive, and better equipped to meet the needs of Minnesota’s growing aging population.

These tools were created to strengthen Minnesota’s long-term care workforce while helping immigrant and refugee team members feel welcomed, prepared, and supported for long-term success. Together, these resources provide multilingual, culturally responsive support for both employees and employers—covering everything from communication and training to retention, workplace belonging, and career advancement.

These resources were informed and shaped by the voices of those closest to the work. Members of the Immigrant Voices Advisory Council and the Employer Voices Advisory Council shared their lived experience, insights, and expertise to identify what supports are most needed, and to guide the development of tools that are practical and meaningful for both New Americans and long-term care employers.
