Jack Bell, a resident at Auburn Homes & Services in Waconia, was recently honored by LeadingAge Minnesota with the Spirit of Aging Award. The Spirit of Aging Award honors an older adult who exemplifies the concept of positive and active aging.

Nurses Encouraged to Leap into Leadership

The Nurses on Boards Coalition has designated Feb. 29 – March 4 as Leap Into Leadership Week, and is encouraging nurses to help improve the health of communities and the nation by serving on boards and other bodies. The coalition’s goal is to ensure 10,000 nurses serve on boards by 2020.

Feedback Needed from Assisted Living Memory Care Providers for Best Practices Survey

Argentum, formerly the Assisted Living Federation of America, is requesting feedback from Assisted Living Memory Care providers on the types of training, programming and environmental approaches viewed as effective in the service of individuals experiencing dementia. The deadline is March 1.

HUD Funding Available for Supportive Services Demonstration for Elderly Households

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has announced the availability of $15 million in funding for up to 80 participants in a new Supportive Services Demonstration for Elderly Households in HUD-Assisted Multifamily Housing designed to produce valid evidence about the impact of supportive services for the elderly on health outcomes.

Adult Day: Tell Congress to Support Community-Based Independence for Seniors Act

Adult Day Services members are encouraged to tell Congress to support the Community-Based Independence for Seniors Act. The Act, which is co-sponsored by Senator Al Franken, would provide funding to establish a demonstration program offering home and community-based services to Medicare eligible beneficiaries.

Minnesota Housing Finance Announces Senior Rental Housing Pilot

To begin addressing the increased need for affordable senior housing with service options, the Minnesota Housing Finance Agency (MHFA) this week announced a new Senior Rental Housing Pilot to identify and test a financing and delivery model that could potentially be brought to a larger scale.

Local Sick Leave Ordinances Could Lead to Broader Statewide Debate

Paid leave has become a hot topic in Minnesota. DHS Commissioner Outlines Priorities at Opinion Leaders Forum

Commissioner Emily Johnson Piper, Minnesota Department of Human Services, provided her perspective on public service and outlined her priorities in the upcoming legislative session during last week’s Opinion Leaders forum. Johnson Piper was appointed DHS Commissioner in late November upon Lucinda Jesson’s appointment to the Minnesota Court of Appeals.

Public Officials of the Year Participate in Institute

Senator Tony Lourey (DFL-Kerrick) and Representative Joe Schomacker (GOP-Luverne) joined LeadingAge Minnesota at its Institute and Expo last week to present the Caregiver of the Year award. Speaking to a crowd of nearly 1,600 attendees during the first day’s General Session, Lourey and Schomacker each took time to honor those who make a difference in the lives of seniors in all the places they call home.

Property Rate System Work About to Pick Up Steam

Save the Date: March 21 is District Day at the Capitol

As we announced in January as part of our 2016 Grassroots: Be the Voice Campaign, we are bringing back Day at the Capitol! Although the State Capitol is still under construction, we will have the opportunity to meet with lawmakers in the State Office Building and the new Senate Office Building during session this year.
