DED Protections for Liberians Extended 1 Year
Posted on April 3, 2019 by Jodi Boyne
President Trump last week issued a memorandum extending Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) protections for Liberians living in the United States through March 30, 2020. It was set to expire on March 31.
The memorandum was welcome news for the Liberians who work in our members communities, their families and the seniors they serve.
LeadingAge Minnesota and its members advocated for this extension with our congressional delegation. We would especially like to thank St. Therese for their participation in a news conferece with Senator Tina Smith and Representative Dean Phillips where they shared the detrimental impact the deportation of Liberians would have on aging services organizations and the people they serve.
In addition to the one-year DED extension, President Trump directed Department of Homeland Security Secretary Nielsen to provide for continued work authorization for Liberian DED beneficiaries. U.S. Custom and Immigration Services will publish a notice in the Federal Register with information on the six-month automatic extension, through Sept. 27, 2019, of employment authorization documents (EADs) currently held by eligible Liberians under DED and instructions on how they can obtain EADs for the remainder of the DED wind-down period.
For more information on employment authorization and how to file for employment authorization document, see USCIS DED Granted Country – Liberia.
