Fact Sheets on Occupancy Classifications for Assisted Living Available from DLI

Posted on May 23, 2024 by Bobbie Guidry

In response to the changes in occupancy classification for Assisted Living facilities over the past few years, which may trigger changes to fire safety and building code requirements, the Department of Labor and Industry (DLI) has developed two information sheets that may be helpful to providers or developers of Assisted Living.

The Assisted Living Occupancy Classifications (mn.gov) is a fact sheet that clarifies occupancy classifications with regards to assisted living in all of its various forms. The increasing number of residents in today's assisted living facilities who need care, including those with dementia, has called for more rigorous fire and life safety regulations and changes in occupancy classifications.

The Assisted Living Group R-3 “dwelling unit” Compliance (mn.gov) is a fact sheet that provides guidance on converting assisted living facilities, non-dementia care, with five or fewer persons receiving care from an existing one- or two-family dwelling, or townhouse, classified as a Group R-3 “dwelling unit.”
