New Resources to Expand Nature Access for Older Adults in Minnesota

Posted on October 10, 2024 by LeadingAge Minnesota

Nature has proven benefits for human health and well-being at every stage of life.

However, as we age, spending time outdoors often comes with new challenges as well as opportunities for connection, learning, and growth. LeadingAge Minnesota has a powerful opportunity to support nature access for older adults.

Older Adults and Nature in Minnesota

Thanks to support from an Age-Friendly Minnesota (AFMN) community grant, A Field Scan of Older Adults and Nature in Minnesota, authored by Joelle Hoeft, is now available. This comprehensive 100-page document explores the opportunities and barriers that older adults face in accessing nature throughout Minnesota. It draws from a statewide survey, key informant interviews, and other research, and highlights innovative programs happening across the state. The Field Scan also includes valuable links to resources and program models for those interested in enhancing outdoor experiences for older adults.

For a more concise overview, an eight-page Expanding Nature Opportunities for People 55+ in Minnesota: A Summary Brief is also available, providing an overview of the Field Scan and sharing information about the second phase of this work, which aims to expand nature opportunities for individuals aged 55 and older in Minnesota.

Both the full Field Scan and the Summary Brief can be found on the Age-Friendly Minnesota Resource page.

Ongoing Work

Phase 2 of the work, which continues through March 2026, is focused on sharing information and models, hosting regional meetings, and connecting people doing this work. A statewide Advisory Council is helping to guide and support the efforts.

If you know of work that helps connect older adults to nature, please share more here.
