Nurse Leaders Embark on Journey to Understand Complex, Challenging and Rewarding Role

Posted on May 1, 2018 by Elizabeth Sether, RN, MHA, LNHA

The Nursing Leadership Symposium kicked off its 27th year last month with 23 nurse leaders embarking on a journey to discover a new set of skills, knowledge and mindset that will help them succeed in their new role.

The first step in their journey? Evaluating their nursing organization based on professional and regulatory standards and identifying how to establish practices that will safely serve the public within the scope of the Minnesota Nurse Practice Act. This session was led by Shirley Brekken, RN and Minnesota Board of Nursing Executive Director, and Brad Haugen, RN, Director of Nursing at Stewartville Care Center and Vice President of the Minnesota Board of Nursing’s governing board.

Resident, tenant and family satisfaction requires the most effective care based on current practice. It is the nurse leader’s role to build a work environment that supports personnel to question standard procedures and to determine how to improve it. Bernita Missal, PhD, RN and faculty member at Bethel University, helped nurse leaders incorporate Evidence Based Practice into their policies, procedures and systems.

It was also time to celebrate the graduation of Allison Matter, RN and Director of Nursing at the Thief River Care Center. Allison said the information and knowledge she gained through the Nursing Leadership Symposium has been applicable in her day-to-day practice. She assured her newest nurse leader colleagues that they too will find how valuable the information and resources accrued during the series is and that they will reference it often. Congratulations Allison!

The next session in the Nursing Leadership Symposium begins on May 8 with a focus on Efficient and Effective Resource Management Strategies. This is a powerful three-day session, as many of the programs and systems the nurse leader oversees drive financial reimbursement, quality outcomes and staff satisfaction.
