Safety Alert: Caustic Cleaning Chemicals

Posted on May 14, 2019 by Julie Apold

LeadingAge Minnesota is issuing Safety Alert based on an emerging theme we have identified in the Minnesota Office of Health Facility Complaints (OHFC) substantiated maltreatment reports. To help members prevent similar harm in their settings, we are distributing this Safety Alert to share learnings from these events and solutions for consideration.

The Safety Alert is being issued for two recent events involving resident deaths related to the ingestion of caustic cleaning chemicals. The Safety Alert is part of our efforts to better support members in on-going their work prevent abuse, neglect and exploitation.

We continue to review the OHFC reports of substantiated maltreatment to identify and share trends and common themes for purposes of learning and improvement. When themes emerge that trigger the need to communicate event learnings on a more urgent basis than a quarterly analysis of the data, LeadingAge MN will distribute a Safety Alert to quickly share this information across the membership.

If you have questions or feedback on this alert, please contact Julie Apold or Bobbie Guidry.
