Independent Living Has Its Own Tough Stuff. Let’s Talk About It.

Posted on September 10, 2026 by Sharon Hollister

Operating independent senior housing comes with challenges all its own. That’s why Tackling the Tough Stuff: Operating Independent Senior Housing Today, coming Thursday, Oct. 8, at Applewood Pointe of Eagan, is focused entirely on the issues facing independent living communities.

A day of practical education designed specifically for independent senior housing — its residents, its operations and its unique challenges.

The agenda tackles four very different but interconnected parts of operating a successful community:

  • Occupancy: Explore strategies for generating leads, improving conversions and reducing preventable turnover.
  • Maintenance: Better understand the property manager’s role, common maintenance issues and when specialized expertise is needed.
  • Wellness: Discover practical, affordable ways to support residents’ independence, quality of life and ability to age in place.
  • Changing resident needs: Learn about resources, reasonable accommodations and referral options that can help when a resident begins needing additional support.

That last conversation is especially important in independent living: How do you respond when a resident’s needs begin to change while respecting their rights and independence? It’s a complex question, and the workshop brings together experts from aging services, adult protection, social work and resource coordination to help participants think it through.

If you work in independent senior housing—or have team members who do—this is an opportunity to spend a day learning alongside others who understand this distinct part of senior living.

Registration is $55 for LeadingAge Minnesota members and includes morning beverages and a boxed lunch.

Learn more and register for the Independent Living Workshop here.
