Initial Recommendations Released from National Nursing Home Quality Coalition

Posted on December 8, 2022 by Julie Apold

The Moving Forward Nursing Home Quality Coalition has issued its first recommendations to address the key recommendations outlined in the April 2022 National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) report – The National Imperative to Improve Nursing Home Quality: Honoring Our Commitment to Residents, Families, and Staff.

The recommendations of the seven Coalition committees, which will be followed in the coming months with detailed action plans, include the following:

  • Person-Centered Care Committee: Create a more collaborative, better-aligned care planning process for each resident and advance new small-house or related nursing home models.
  • Workforce Committee: Improve the benefits and compensation of nursing home staff.
  • Transparency and Accountability Committee: Improve the collection, auditing, and sharing of nursing home-level ownership, financing, and operations data.
  • Nursing Home Finance Reform Committee: Develop and pilot an alternative payment model.
  • Quality Assurance Committee: Pilot program to better integrate quality assurance and oversight efforts.
  • Quality Measurement and Improvement Committee: Develop and test two nursing home quality measures on resident experience, health equity, and disparities.
  • Health Information Technology (HIT) Committee: Identify Health Information technology (HIT) enabled methods to improve person-centered care by collecting resident goals, preferences, and priorities, and envision a pathway for national HIT adoption

Provide input into initial recommendations

Throughout December, the Coalition is soliciting feedback from the public on these initial priorities as it begins the next stage of developing detailed action plans.

To provide feedback:

  • Register to participate in a Dec. 13 feedback session
  • Provide written feedback by the end of December

About the Moving Forward Nursing Home Quality Coalition

The Moving Forward Nursing Home Quality Coalition is a two-year initiative to improve nursing home quality. The Coalition includes a diverse group of nursing home residents, care partners, family members, providers, and leading experts to develop and test action plans to advance recommendations from the April 2022 NASEM report. The John A. Hartford Foundation funds the Coalition with leadership from LeadingAge, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), other national organizations, and subject matter experts.
