A stakeholders group, including LeadingAge Minnesota members, has completed an updated toolkit to assist care centers in complying with federal emergency preparedness requirements that providers must implement by November 2017. The Toolkit is available through the Metro Health & Medical Preparedness Coalition, and includes a variety of sample documents and tools. This work updates a toolkit that was first completed in August 2013.

The Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) will start the final wave of care center appraisals in September as part of its effort to develop a new property rate system. To help members in the final wave prepare for the appraisals, LeadingAge Minnesota, Care Providers of Minnesota and DHS will host a conference call/webinar on Aug. 25 at 2 p.m.

The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) recently released application materials for this year’s round of the nursing facility moratorium exceptions process. Care centers interested in applying should complete and return the application materials to MDH by Wednesday, Dec. 9. Following a review process early next year, MDH expects to have a list of approved projects by March 28.

The care center payment system has been broken for well over a decade now. While annual increases in rates are dependent on action by the Minnesota Legislature, which in many years is not forthcoming, costs continue to go up and competition for labor continue to put providers in a weaker position. The Long-Term Care Imperative is introducing a major reform initiative this week addressing the workforce challenges that providers face while improving quality and preserving access throughout the state.
